The Ego Dies in Darkness...
….A New Self Emerges in the Light
Read on for an excerpt from the first chapter of The Exploratory Mind.
‘‘Screams ripped through the abyss…
…probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of spirituality or meditation—but if there is one key lesson that could be translated out of my three-week night, it’s that you cannot have enlightenment without darkness. Whether you think of it as a key, a doorway, or a rite of passage, time spent in the dark is something to be valued. That is exactly why I decided to seek it out.
It was 2002 and, at the time, an advanced practice, meaning that the experience could be so intense that only those who had spent decades cultivating a still and expansive mind were advised to attend. Anyone who was not properly prepared would likely come face-to-face with some kind of personal demon in the dark.
When we meet our own personal demons, it represents a healing process. Some need more healing than others. It also represents our own resistance to the process of learning and growth. Without a doubt, some participants in the darkness retreat encountered demons that they were not ready to learn about.
Hence, the screaming.
This was why the retreat had a strict buddy system. It was a matter of safety comparable to scuba diving. If there is a malfunction with your breathing apparatus, you need someone there to help you. In the case of darkness, your breathing apparatus is consciousness itself. The comparison to diving into a vast ocean full of life was apt in many ways, and only served to draw me in.’’
